CQC Rating: Required Improvement

Thalassa Nursing Home Response to CQC Inspection report June 2019

The service was inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in June 2019. The service has always been rated as GOOD for the past 15 years. For this inspection the CQC confirmed that the home continues to be a GOOD effective, caring and well led home. However, we require improvement in two areas, we are taking action to ensure we are responsive and the care and support we provide is always safe.

While we know the residents very well and know how to support them and what they like and don’t like our care records didn’t always show what we did to keep risk to a minimum when giving care and support. We have looked at all risks and written plans for them so that we know what they are and how to reduce them. We also know make sure that the care in the care plan is the same as what we have written on the daily living sheet.

We give a lot of time and attention to ensuring all our staff know residents’ individual needs. We will be making sure we write all these individual preferences in the resident’s care plan. This will make sure new staff know right away what a resident does and does not like. This will include all preferences including those for end of life care.

Where residents can make their own decisions, we will make sure this happens and residents will sign their paperwork to show this. Those residents who don’t have capacity to sign will have an assessment to explain this. We will write care plans which tell staff what care is in the residents Best Interests. This information will come from the previous known wishes of the residents, their supporters and health professionals. Our nurses are skilled to do these plans and we have implemented a competency assessment framework for them. This will ensure we are providing them with the training and support they need to be the best they can in their work.

Even though we have a good activity programme we are reviewing this to provide new activities for residents. This will hopefully see more residents choosing to join in. We will keep detailed records so we can see what residents enjoyed or didn’t like.  The activities will increase our local community presence.

The service is home to people who have full capacity and a few who are living with dementia. There will be dementia friendly signage put up around the home to help people find the bathrooms and their bedroom more easily which will promote independence.

We are looking at how we can ensure we make all these changes and check on them, we have a system in place already and will be reviewing it to make sure that we address our action plan quickly and have ways to check our improvements regularly.

Please feel able to speak to the manager Fiona if you want an update of what we have been doing to action the inspection report.

When we don’t have what is required of us quite right, we take this seriously. We will work quickly and safely to give residents and their supporter’s confidence that Thalassa continues to give the best life possible to the residents. You will see from the report that the areas requiring improvement are around our paperwork and not how we give everyday care, love, support and attention to the residents.

Our aim is to be the best for the residents whenever we can, and we are committed to doing this as we move forward.
